Catherine Russ was born in Ōtautahi Christchurch, Aotearoa New Zealand.
She lives and works in Ōtautahi Christchurch.
Her work explores metamorphosis, heritage, and myth, as well as relationships between individuals, the shifting contexts they navigate, and the forces that drive transformation. For her work, she selects ordinary materials such as magazines, charcoal, pastel and paint because of their accessibility, functionality, and associations. Russ is grounded in traditional methods yet guided by a contemporary perspective. She strives to connect materials, themes, and processes with the memories and emotions of those who encounter her work.
